Although the sensor is not quite as large as some other smaller CSCs, it’s the same sized sensor as that utilised in the headline-making Sony RX100 III. The sensor is also capable of delivering HD video capture at full 1920 x 1080 resolution and at 30fps. The NX Mini’s small frame also manages to pack in a decent sized LCD screen. The model sports a 3in TFT LCD touchscreen, although unfortunately its 460k-dot resolution is somewhat disappointing by today’s standard. The screen is, however, of the vari-angle variety and can be tilted around 180-degrees to be viewed from in front of the lens – perfect for selfies. As you might expect for a new Samsung CSC, the NX Mini ships with a host of connectivity options. The model sports both Wi-fi and NFC connectivity, meaning that it can communicate with either Smartphone or Tablet on both the Android and iOS operating systems with ease. Well, measuring in at around 119mm wide, 62mm tall and thick – and weighing just 196g body only – it’s more in the category of most flagship smartphones currently on the market than competing CSCs. What’s also welcome is the choice and design of the kit lens which ships with the NX Mini. This is a 9mm f/ prime optic which both provides a pleasingly wide angle shooting experience and also is designed much like a pancake lens, and thus adds very little to the overall depth of the camera body. Touchscreen The majority of the camera’s shooting functionality can be accessed through the camera’s reasonably-sized touchscreen, although unlike some other touchscreen cameras there are a range of physical buttons placed around the camera’s body. Unfortunately some of the buttons are poorly placed, with two particular culprits. The model’s Direct Link’ button is placed right next to the power buttons, while the movie record button is placed perilously close to the natural resting place of your thumb while shooting. As a result, both of these buttons are easy to press accidentally, something I found myself doing on more than one occasion. The actual finish of the body itself is described by Samsung as being bound by a natural leather-like material’, although closer inspection reveals this to be a somewhat misguided claim. Samsung NX Mini Review – Performance Although the NX Mini does feature a reasonable AF set-up, unfortunately it is lacking in the kind of on-chip phase detection AF several other cameras in Samsung’s CSC line-up feature. The set-up found in the NX Mini is solely of the contrast detect variety, featuring 21 AF points in the standard mode, increasing to 35 points when shooting in close-up mode. On the whole the AF performance is generally acceptable, delivering fast focusing speeds and accurately-focused subjects. There is one concern over the camera’s AF performance, however, and that’s when shooting self-portraits. On occasion the NX Mini showed a tendency to lose focus all together, hunting for focus just before taking the shot and then triggering. In terms of tracking focus, however, the camera does perform a lot better. The touchscreen allows users to simply press on the subject they want to track and the camera does the rest. Action camera This makes the NX Mini a capable action shooter, a facet enhanced by the fast maximum shutter speed of 1/16000 second and a burst mode shooting speed of 6fps. One impressive area is the camera’s battery life, especially when you consider how small the camera’s body is. Samsung claims that the 2330mAh battery is good for around 650 shots on a single charge with the kit lens, and during the test I generally found this claim to ring true. Samsung NX Mini Review – Image Quality Colour and white balance While the NX Mini’s auto white balance generally performs well, it does display a slight tendency to lean towards the warmer end of the spectrum when the chance presents itself. As a result, greens can suffer and appear less vibrant than in reality. That being said, the NX Mini does cope well in the majority of settings, delivering attractive blue skies and generally even scenes. Furthermore, there are a host of white balance presents available, including custom white balance, while each setting can be tweaked to suit personal taste. Exposure The NX Mini utilises the same 221-block segment metering system as seen in previous NX models, and not without good reason. The system has performed well in the past and it does so again with the NX Mini, rarely requiring any intervention with regards to exposure compensation in the variety of metering modes available. The level of dynamic range captured is also fairly reasonable considering the fact that the NX Mini isn’t packing an APS-C sensor. There is a slight tendency towards the darker areas of the scene, thus resulting in odd occasions of blown highlights, however this can be rectified thanks to the camera’s Smart Range+ and HDR modes. Noise The Samsung NX Mini sports a substantial ISO range of 160-12800, extendable to ISO 100-25600. In practice, the far reaches of the camera’s ISO range are best reserved for emergencies however, with the NX Mini struggling towards the upwards extremities. Between ISO 160 and 1600 there’s not much noise of note, although it does become noticeable at the latter of those settings. Above ISO 1600 thing deteriorate, with images becoming smudged and displeasing due to aggressive noise reduction. As ever, if you’re happy to shoot Raw then you can control the noise reduction yourself in post-production, something made even more attractive by the fact that the NX Mini ships with Adobe Lightroom in the box. Padahal sensor yang kecil membuat hasil foto jadi kurang baik. Jika bila memang ingin cari kamera kecil dengan lensa kecil, maka pertimbangkanlah kamera yang punya sensor kecil yang tidak terlalu kecil, misalnya sensor 1 inci. Tidak banyak produsen kamera yang bermain di sensor kecil 1 inci. Tercatat hanya Nikon yang konsisten dengan produk Nikon 1 seri J, seri V dan seri S. Padahal sistem Nikon 1 menurut saya berhasil mewujudkan ide miniaturisasi kamera yang mungkin berguna bagi penyuka travel atau fotografi harian yang ringan. If you want to capture images with a shallow depth of field you'll have to opt for a camera with a larger sensor or wait on Samsung to release faster glass for the NX Mini system; a 17mm f/ 46mm equivalent is scheduled for release next month. The NX Mini's slim body limits the amount of controls that Samsung can incorporate. There's no physical mode dial; instead you'll only find the shutter release, power button, and a Wi-Fi button on the top plate. The rear control houses a movie record button integrated into the thumb rest, along with Menu, Mode, playback, and delete buttons below. At their center are four directional controls with a center OK button. Three of these are standard—Display, AF, and Drive—but the bottom position requires a little explaining. It toggles between the bottom row of on-screen shooting settings shutter speed, aperture, exposure value compensation, and ISO. It highlights the active control in blue, allowing you to use the left and right directional buttons to adjust it. This would typically be assigned to a control dial, but the NX Mini doesn't have one. The control system on its own is a little frustrating, especially to photographers are used to loads of button and dials, even on compact mirrorless bodies. It's almost a necessity to use the touch-screen display to supplement the buttons. You can tap the rear display to change the focus point, access the Wi-Fi menu, launch the main menu, and launch the Fn overlay. There's no physical Fn button, but it's a handy screen if you like to adjust settings. From there you have direct touch control over the shutter speed, aperture, EV compensation setting, ISO, white balance, autofocus mode and area, metering pattern, drive mode, flash output, face detection settings, and what Samsung calls the Picture Wizard, which gives you control over the colors and tone of images. Despite the addition of touch controls, the NX Mini is going to leave serious photographers frustrated with the difficulty of adjusting settings. Even though the NX Mini is capable of Raw shooting, it's really designed with more automatic operation in mind. Its touch input is as good as a smartphone; you can pinch images to zoom in and check for focus or peek at a small detail, and you can swipe through photos when in playback mode. It can pair with a phone or tablet via NFC or a standard Wi-Fi connection, so you can copy images and videos over using the free Samsung Smart Camera app for iOS and Android. The only real limitation to instant sharing is the lack of support for Raw images—you'll need to shoot in JPG or Raw+JPG in order to share them via Wi-Fi; in-camera Raw processing is not available. If you do opt to shoot in Raw+JPG, you may run into a minor bug—the timestamp on Raw files is five hours ahead when shooting both formats simultaneously. Oddly enough, it's correct when shooting Raw images on their own. Performance and ConclusionsPerformance and ConclusionsThe NX Mini starts and grabs an in-focus photo in about 3 seconds, which is on the slow side. Its autofocus system is quick in bright light, locking on in but it slows to about in dim light. It can capture a burst of up to 30 JPG images at 10 frames per second, but drops to 6fps when shooting Raw and is limited to four shots before slowing down when shooting in that format. The Panasonic GM1 is quicker to start up, doing so in 1 second; it matches the NX Mini in focus speed in bright light, and is faster in dim conditions. The GM1 does lag behind in burst shooting It can capture JPG images continuously at just 5fps, and only manages to capture eight Raw images at before slowing down. At f/ it shows 2,080 lines on the center-weighted test, with good sharpness at all but the very edges of the frame, which record just 1,150 lines. Narrowing the aperture to f/4 shows very marginal improvement, but at f/ the average score 2,255 lines and edges 1,715 lines improve. Diffraction, which limits sharpness, sets in at f/8; the overall score drops to 2,095 lines here and edges show 1,625 lines. There's just a little bit of barrel distortion, percent, which gives images a very slightly noticeable outward curve. Imatest also checks photos for noise, which can add unwanted grain and detract from image quality when shooting at the high ISO settings required in dim light. When shooting in JPG, it keeps noise below percent though ISO 6400. Close examination of images from our ISO test scene on a calibrated NEC MultiSync PA271W$ at AmazonOpens in a new window display shows that detail here is quite rough. The NX Mini does its best to keep the ISO set to 3200 or lower when shooting in Auto mode, a setting at which detail still suffers. Things are better at ISO 1600—the top setting at which the camera will default when shooting in Program, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priority—but you'll get noticeably sharper images at ISO 800 and below. Despite having a larger image sensor, comparison of crops from test shots from the Panasonic GM1 with the NX Mini show that the Mini's higher-resolution sensor captures more detail at high ISO settings. Neither keeps pace with one of the best low-light mirrorless shooters we've seen, the APS-C Sony Alpha 6000. Video is recorded at 1080p30 quality in MP4 format. The footage is crisp and smooth, and the NX Mini is quick to change focus as the scene changes. My voice came over loud and clear on the soundtrack, and while there is a slight whirring noise as the lens adjusts its focus, it's not overwhelming. There's an expansion port on the top of the body, and the remainder of the ports are hidden by a flap on the side. There's a micro HDMI connector that plugs into an HDTV, a micro USB port it also charges the battery, and a micro SD card slot. The battery is big; if you lay it down on the faceplate it takes up all of the space from the edge to the lens mount. Samsung doesn't include an external charger, so if you do opt to purchase a spare you'll have to charge it internally or buy an external charger for it. The Samsung NX Mini is one of the smallest interchangeable lens cameras on the market, and one of the more affordable ones. It's built for sharing; Wi-Fi implementation is excellent and its small size encourages you to take it with you wherever you go. Image quality is quite good, rivaling 1-inch compacts like the pricey Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II$ at AmazonOpens in a new window, but serious shutterbugs will be turned off by the limited range of lenses that go hand-in-hand with a new system and a control layout that is best suited for automatic mode. The included prime lens is wide enough to fit you and a friend in a quick selfie, and if you're used to shooting with a smartphone camera you'll feel right at home with its non-zooming wide-angle field of view, but for another $100 you can opt for a kit with a zoom lens. The bigger lens cuts down on the pocket-friendly form factor, but by no means make the Mini a large camera. If you're a serious photographer and are looking for something small, but with a larger lens library, the Panasonic GM1 is your best bet—but it's $300 more expensive. The best affordable mirrorless camera that we've tested, the Sony Alpha 6000, is in another class in terms of size, but its performance is impeccable. Pros Excellent Wi-Fi implementation.
